In a non-glib conversation about guns, as a legal, law-abiding gun owner, I support gun education, but this is in no way a substitute for proper gun control.

Mass shootings aside, thousands of people die every year because of unsafe storage and handling of guns, and I feel like it's a taboo to talk about guns with peers and family.

It's important to know what safe gun ownership looks like, to recognize when it's not safe, and to know what to do about it.

We all know what to do if we encounter a downed power line or smell gas. But the reality is we're SUBSTANTIALLY more likely to be killed or injured by a gunshot.

I've posted pictures of myself here shooting guns. And while it freaks out people on the far right, the reality is every one of those pictures is taken at a shooting range in the presence of a range safety officer.

This is a really good way to get acquainted with gun safety, and you can go to a local public range and rent a gun for not that much money. I recommend it for the simple sake of knowing what they feel like, how to safe them, etc.

We have 100,000,000+ guns in this country. We need to be as aware of gun safety as we are about smelling gas leaks and avoiding downed power lines. This is not *instead* of gun control. This is a necessary step because gun control isn't gonna happen overnight.

Possibly maybe it would be an idea to have slightly fewer guns in your country?

We definitely need that but like, if wanting that and recognizing that made that reality happen, we wouldn't be here. So while we need to work tirelessly to get to that point, we also need to recognize that there's work to be done along the way.
