True story: I was 32 when I found out that pipe cleaners were for smoking pipes and not like, water pipes.

It was in my *second* semester of Chemistry of Materials at engineering school that I learned that flammable and inflammable meant the same thing.

Like, it's *really* bad if you think inflammable is the opposite of flammable.

I always think it's like "famous" and "infamous," where inflammable is flammable but *worse*

Wait so... what’s the word for “not flammable” Unflammable? Aflammable? Imflammable?

Confusingly, nonflammable, not flammable, and fireproof also mean flammable.

This has me thinking about the ninja turtle pajamas I had as a kid. The tag said “flame retardant” which just made me imagine burning to death in them slowly But also, they totally ruled

I only learned a year or two ago that inflammable meant able to be inflamed, but I had nodded along with the saying for way longer because I thought it was pointing out that even something marketed as not flammable will burn at high enough temperature. words are weird.

Ironically, that's why "flammable" was coined as a word ("inflammable came first and "not inflammable" confused immigrants who spoke languages with negative concord)
