Here in MN, we have a guaranteed 2 more months anyway so Phil can predict all he wants. When the ice fishing houses sink in the lake, Spring’s here.

Here in the north with snow on the ground and sun near the horizon clouds = moisture in the air which means warm weather sun = dry air, warmth escapes to the sky.

I just read about an older version with a witch who collects firewood...if it's nice and she can get more, she'll allow winter to continue. If not, she's gonna run out soon...

It makes perfect sense - using proper groundhog logic. Sunny=>sees his own shadow=>becomes frightened & depressed=>runs back into hole = more cold and dark.

Sunny means no cloud to trap heat, sunny means winds chasing any clouds out, sunny in February (up in the Midwest) means cold.

the groundhog is an aspect of the god of summer, kill phil to stop global warming and bring about the eternal winter

As a Pennsylvania resident the whole thing just seems like something a bunch of drunk guys came up with that got way out of hand.

What always confused me was the 6 month thing...if he sees his shadow, 6 more month of winter...if he doesn't, we'll have spring in 6 months...and the difference is WHAT??? THAT always confused me as a kid!

6 weeks. Not months

In my experience of Alaskan winters, sunny = super cold bc overcast = clouds = moisture suspended in the air. If it’s super cold that moisture has already been turned to snow and left behind on some mountain behind you.

In winter in New England I find sunny means fuckin cold, while rain/snow brings warmer temps.

If it's a Sunny Winter day, you don't have the same emotional need the random hope of an early Spring. It's when you haven't seen the sun for months that you need to cling to that forlorn hope.

What does the bear with you say? I mean, if the bear stopped hibernating, it must be warming up right?
