Liz is a hero but I wanna challenge this a little (with a nod to knowing she has to toe a fine line here). If the goodness of a workspace is contingent upon you surrendering rights and/or privileges, then it cannot also be fine.https://twitter.com/lizthegrey/status/956519936985362432 …

There was a point in tech during Yahoo's downfall where if you were (a man) in tech, the thought of working there was like getting cooties. "Hey, wanna work for Yahoo?" "Why the fuck would I do that?"

And this is deeply unfair to Yahoo but it was real, because all the hot jobs that gave you upward trajectories were elsewhere.

Right now, if you're an underrepresented minority or a woman in tech, there are a lot of companies that are treated just like that. "Wanna interview at Facebook?" "Why the fuck would I do that?"

Google's not yet there. But it's trending that way. And if it does, that's going to have a big impact on the long-term success of diversifying technology.

It's a really really bad sign, and I despair daily about how incremental the changes there are trying to be from high up, and how they depend on people acting in good faith, and how ineffective that is against the tide of bad faith.

And then I go to work and try to get my job done between despairing and agitating and trying to make things change. And because I'm easymode, people think it's leadership and inspiring, not an insufficiency of technical output or inability to fit in. Not that they then listen.

honestly I think tech really does need to burn, and I say that as someone who has spent the better part of the past decade working at smallish startups in the belly of the beast
