I want to do a follow up soon, but apparently there is a pretty limited number of items that can literally be used for a crime. They do it a lot with guns/ammunition that are used to commit crimes but that are manufactured outside of Virginia, giving feds the option to prosecute.

It'd be interesting to know what those items are.

Yeah seriously, that should be dismissed for overreach. What's next, his shirt was made in Bangladesh so it's a federal crime? That's insane.

Anything that involves commerce across state lines is a federal crime. So, robbing a 7-11 is a federal crime because the goods in the store traveled across state lines. I guess an iphone bought from out of state counts as well.

What makes it a federal crime shouldn't be that the phone was made in China. It should be that cellular phone networks necessarily transmit data across state lines. This line of reasoning baffles me.
