The most telling thing about our present zeitgeist is that there is a pushback going, "woah, women can ruin men's careers, that's too much power."

Men have had the power to ruin women's lives with an utterance forever. This is just a thimbleful of equality. The pushback shows how badly we, as a culture, don't want women to be seen as equals.

Education about consent is key. This women never gave consent to some activities described AND WITHDREW consent to others and yet her boundaries were repeatedly violated. That is not "just" bad sex. That is simply wrong. Change will come (albeit not fast enough.)

You can't mentally and silently "withdraw consent" and expect it to have any meaning. I'm all for affirmative consent, but also for adults treating each other like adults.

I find it interesting how different people can read the same text so differently. I read lack of explicit consent, repeated verbal demurral, physical withdrawal on her part; repeated verbal ack of demurral followed by aggressive pursuit on his.

at least twice she says "no" in pretty uncertain terms, and he takes a step back but then returns aggressively. To be clear, I see explicit withdrawal of consent at least twice.

if the message is "you must say NO, loudly and clearly, MULTIPLE TIMES, or consent is assumed" then, well, I disagree. Also ignores power dynamics, "home turf" advantage, etc.

most specifically, honestly confused by your statement "mentally and silently withdraw consent" as both verbal and physical actions were taken, by her report (which is what we have to go on here).

I read her explicit statement "you ignored my nonverbal cues" as basically setting an unreachable standard for how any personal interaction works, in practice. If you stay nonverbal there's a good chance your cues will just be missed, in good faith.

yeah, you’re ignoring a lot of text. Not interested in continuing discussion.

Women aren't ruining these men's careers. These men are ruining their own careers by having been pieces of shit.

This new essay in NYTimes is pretty good: http://nyti.ms/2DbNSEp  Summary: "Nuanced conversations about consent have been happening for a long time. The reason they feel foreign to so many men is that so many men never felt like they needed to listen, writes Lindy West."
