My friend pointed out that there are more infinite numbers between 1 and 3 than 2 and 3 and it ruined my day
There are not. There are precisely as many infinite rationals between 1 and 3 as there are between 2 and 3; and precisely as many infinite irrationals as well.
This is the paradoxical nature of infinities and is a motivator for the concept of "measure". [1, 3] should be "bigger" than [2, 3] but cardinality is insufficient.
my personal favourite: the sum of all the positive integers is -1/12!
kinda, ish.
without analytic continuation on the zeta function, lots of physics doesn't work :D
Math is completely trustworthy, for certain values of "trustworthy".
As a former math teacher: muhahahha
they say it is "backed by math" which shows a fundamental misunderstanding of both math and currency
If mathematicians want my trust they can stop working for Wall Street, sez I
Make a square of length 1. Then from the upper-left corner(s), cut out a square of length 1/2, then 1/4, 1/8, etc. At each step, the circumference of the remaining polygon is 4. But if you repeat this infinitely many times, you'll get a triangle with circumference 2+sqrt(2)pic.twitter.com/RJpXu6KMOd
Not to mention, $&@# statistics ....
I just saw this last tweet and I was about to increase your genus by one because maths is awesome and more trustworthy than anything else, but then I saw the rest of the thread and I’ll forgive you.
So is the universe
So true.
This is my favourite thread. I miss studying math.
