A big issue I have with the "you don't need a CS degree/yes we so" discussion is that it fails to account for the costs of a path through higher ed.

An astonishing number of universities, public and private, for instance, have first-year on-campus residency requirements. This inflates actual costs.

ahh, do the credits transfer? here in Canada I find the quality is much lower for STEM programs (not that universities don't have a *ton* of work to do on that front)

Yep, most CCs have transfer agreements that are actually super-beneficial to the student.
