A big issue I have with the "you don't need a CS degree/yes we so" discussion is that it fails to account for the costs of a path through higher ed.

And that's really at odds with the notion that minority candidates need a technical degree to access our industry's wealth.

So what I'm saying is: this conversation is incomplete without an earnest discussion about hoe we can build apprenticeship models, recruiting models, and alternative ed models that genuinely support diversity. Because undergraduate education can't be the only solution.

why the start in community college?
-
In the American system, at least, the first 2 years of undegrad coursework can largely be taken at a community college at much lower cost.
-
An astonishing number of universities, public and private, for instance, have first-year on-campus residency requirements. This inflates actual costs.

*or if they can get a scholarship, which yes are hard to come by, but make 4yr degrees possible for some people who would otherwise go to CC. And you're right, associates on way to bachelors is a good path for many. Probably also reduces impact of changing majors if you do.

Agreed! Community college is a great bargain, and often just as good for early years.

I’ve wondered for a while if “born in the window where both computers and college were cheap” should be viewed as a form of privilege.

Couldn’t agree with this more. This is how I would do it if I could go back. Honestly, the entry level courses I took
@SeattleColleges as prereqs before applying to grad school were on par or better than the ones I took at@NorthwesternU as an undergrad.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
