And they're able to maintain that view of the world because there is an extent to which reality conforms with their expectation. "Based Stickman" can show up wherever and 99% of the random people who see him won't know he's "Based Stickman" on the internet, or what that means.

Buuuuuut in provoking and escalating an ongoing conflict, these guys increasingly over time are *not* interacting with random people, but with a sample of people selected for engagement with the conflict.

So in the Sad Puppies, we had the movement's leaders basically being "first of all how dare you make accusations based on our blog posts we didn't realize you were reading and not off our official statements of intent where we say we're the not-racist good guys".

And now we've got "Based Stickman", an alt-right volkhero whose whole image revolves around the fact that the Perfectly Legal And Ordinary And Innocent Piece Of Wood He Carries For Legal Purposes Officer is in fact a weapon, and he's on trial for weapon charges relating to it.

And he got himself into further hot water by violating the terms of his bail (which included "no weapons") by posting a video of himself HOLDING A WEAPON and explaining how he's using it to get around his bail conditions.https://www.rawstory.com/2017/12/alt-right-icon-based-stickman-has-bail-revoked-after-brandishing-weapon-and-making-threats-on-youtube/ …

Does he think judges and prosecutors can't see YouTube? Did he think that if it was marketed as a "self-defense device" or "key chain" that meant it couldn't also be a weapon somehow? He held it up and said "I will peel your scalp off with this thing." On the internet.

I mean, it is entirely possible that he knew this would get him in trouble and he did it hoping that it would extend his time in the celebrity circle, give him more cred as a Terribly Oppressed Fighter of Freedoms, more excuses to crowdfund for legal bills, etc.

Buuuuut that still falls extremely under the heading of "Did Not Think This Through". And there is an existing pattern of these doofs behaving like their internet stuff is "just the internet" or somehow invisible to everyone else.

The funniest thing in all this is that there's a not-uncommon line of thinking in the circles that elevated Mr. "Based Stickman" Chapman that he turned informant after he got into legal trouble.

I don't have a particular opinion on the likelihood of that but I do like to imagine him selling out his cohorts and then screwing up his own plea deal by trying to milk both sides, ultimately leaving him twisting in the wind with no support in either direction.

I happen to know another similar figure in a similar situation.

I hope there are more and more of them until the whole sorry movement is pointing fingers at each other.
