Stop demanding better facial recognition for marginalized people. "This automatic surveillance software is poorly tuned to Black people" isn't actually the social justice take we think it is.https://twitter.com/novascopia/status/942077273603264513 …

technology is racist because it is made by racists no Chinese women in testing face ID? this happens no black ppl in testing automatic soap dispensers? doesn't work for them no black people in testing face-tracking? only recognizes light faces etc https://twitter.com/ladbible/status/941737664050597888 …

You know what we as an industry really need to not do? Use our collective resources to further develop surveillance tools that can be used to further oppress marginalized populations. We need to *STOP MAKING SURVEILLANCE TOOLS*

It is useful in making clear though that algorithms are made by people with bias...not some pure elsewhere.... but I agree in general.

There's actually plenty of evidence of that in the bajillion other examples that we don't actually need to argue this position.

It's a very specific angle on this issue. Which exists not only in Apple's face ID, but is prevalent in regular photography, motion sensors etc. (Of course an individual company does not matter – but regular tech should be accessible by all.)

I believe tech should be more accessible to more people. And hard work is needed on systemic bias and racism. But it's also helpful to consider if the future we want has more or less facial recognition in it.
