One of the things I noticed from reading the various reports on Charlottesville Law Enforcement is that their principle means of monitoring social media were via Hashtags.

As someone who rarely uses hashtags, I probably slipped largely under the radar (although they did eventually figure out who I am anyhow).

The VSP report was very clear about social media monitoring in terms of tracking attendance and intention for protest events. The FBI absolutely, 10000% learned from UTR.

It's probably all going into a Splunk instance that looks for keywords; they then run automated reports/metrics against terms to generate alerts for agents, etc.
