Software engineering as a field can enforce a dichotomy between developer/engineer when those who prattle about the sacred stature of the "engineer" title actually start engaging with the ethics and praxis implied by it.

I am literally a software engineer by trade. And I taught software engineering. That being said, there are some jerks in this field. The “engineering” term is not sacred. It’s just meant to promote the idea that good software must be carefully designed and tested.
-
And one of the best software engineers I work with earned his degree in psychology.

"Engineer" is, in certain jurisdictions, a legally protected professional designation that requires passing exams, apprenticing under another engineer, and registering with a regional professional association. 1/2

Professional engineering associations have mostly focused on "traditional" disciplines. They largely ignored software until it was too late, and now struggle to assert authority over the domain (and don't really know how to deal with such a new, malleable, volatile domain). 2/2

I’m confused, the engineer used YOLO or Tensorflow?

And, while I'm here: the Iron Ring in Canada simply means you finished engineering school and swore an oath written by Rudyard Kipling to protect the public. It is unrelated to the Professional Engineer designation protected by law.
-
#funfact You know three things when you spot someone wearing an Iron Ring: they're Canadian, they're an engineer, and which hand they write with (the ring is worn on the pinkie of their writing hand as a constant reminder of their obligation to the public).
