Vanguard America was not established, it is a new group. As for the others, if there are no distinctions between them, then why did you mention Klan and NSM separately? The fact is that there are a number of different types of white supremacists and distinctions matter.

I didn't say it wasn't new, I said it was established, which it absolutely was. I don't dispute that different groups exist. I dispute that nitpicking that different groups exist has any meaningful outcome-based impact.

One could argue that there is value in distinction when it comes to counter-recruitment. But in terms of violence and measured outcomes, it actually doesn't matter whether James Fields wore a swastika or a Vanguard America logo on his shirt.

      1. You are certainly persistent in trying to explain white supremacy to me. It does matter, of course. Different white supremacist segments can be more or less active, or rising or falling, simultaneously. In the 1980s-1990s, for example, Christian Identity

      2. was one of the main sources of white supremacist violence. Today it is far less significant as a source of violence--so someone trying to deter or investigate white supremacist violence would be errant in placing too many resources there.

I am not trying to explain white supremacy to you nor am I trying to invalidate these distinctions. What I am trying to do is--as a survivor--critique your dismissal of the alt-right's terrorism (and that of their allies) as what it is.

The only thing I "dismissed" was the notion that Cernovich and Prosobiec were terrorists. I did not suggest that the alt right was not dangerous or even that adherents had not engaged in acts that were arguably terrorism--or might engage in more in the future.

The alt right, in the few years of its existence, has less of a track record of violence than every other segment of the white supremacist movement.

That was just a response to someone calling alt right a "weaker equivalent of Al Qaeda." (I earlier misremembered it as ISIS) That is what my tweet objected to, because, far from being Al Qaeda, the alt right so far is not even the most violent segment of the ws movement.

Perhaps the era of rallies is over, but as far as I am concerned they all organized together in Charlottesville, and so the violence that happened belongs to all of them. So setting our window to the past year, I see no distinction.

White supremacists of different types often rally together, just as people from different segments of the far left often rally together--doesn't mean that there are no meaningful distinctions among either. When needed, white supremacists can be grouped as white supremacists.

So maybe the alt right is like the tiget cubs of neo nazis, getting misguided and ignorant people an introduction to hate and Nazism? I've read that prior to 9/11 white supremacists were the biggedt threat to American democracy.

I personally think biggest threat to American democracy actually comes from people who want to weaken and de-legitimize all the institutions & norms on which our democracy is based and depends. This past year has me worried the foundation may be more fragile than I used to think.
