@EmilyGorcenski I am wondering whether voting machines can be ever fixed. Isn't the better goal to enforce paper voting?

Good point! I'm totally +1 on audits. Do you talk about pre-voting or on voting-day audits? I'm just curious

Mostly day-of would be sufficient for now, though malicious action would adapt.

Sounds a bit like playing cat and mouse :(

No different than computer security, tbh. Chasing 0-days.
-
Is there actual research about approachability of voting machines throughout the society?

Elections tend to be swung by a tiny percentage of the population. Random audits could easily cover that percentage.

Why not digital voting from a computer or other device instead? It’s 2017, there’s technology to solve this problem :)
-
Literally no technology has proven itself sufficiently verifiable. Paper ballots have an orders of magnitude lower failure rate.
-
This is 100% a technical problem. Human or paper audits have not worked for hundreds of years. New types of technology should be considered.
