I studied a lot of military history growing up. It's where a lot of my knowledge comes from. One thing always struck me, though.

One reason isn't widely known, learned from my stepdad. You could take another specific draftee's tour for them.

Maybe partially. I suspect it had to do with a sense of community. They felt they fit in better with combat troops and those societal rules.
