The legal community needs to stop fetishizing defending Nazi speech until it starts consistently showing up for marginalized folks' speech.

It allows them to feel like they're making a deeply painful yet morally principled stand.
-
Meanwhile, no one is showing up to help trans folks fight insurance denials.
-
I have a lot of trouble understanding the ACLU's priorities. You can't prioritize defending everyone's free speech. Why do this?
-
My best guess is that they're trying to deflect the "ACLU is leftist" by being assholes.
-
I dont think they're leftists....
-
Oh no, neither do I. But I think it's a common claim that's lobbed in their direction by conservatives when they disagree with the ACLU.
-
Exactly. When an organization allows warped fringe voices to manipulate them, no good comes of it.
-
And as with CNN and the NYT, no amount of caping for Nazis will protect the ACLU when the Nazis decide to turn on them.
