Book burning is incorrectly thrown out as a form of censorship and a hallmark of fascism by many people.

A monument stands here now. Below the ground. It is empty shelves of a library.pic.twitter.com/w587KXq2f0
-
These shelves contained everything about people like me. Hormone studies still never repeated.
-
Of all the memorials I have seen, this is the first to reduce me to tears. I am standing over it now, weeping.
-
-
We have the technology to make this never happen again. But we won't spend the money to rebuild that knowledge.
-
It's left to the people like us to collect our records and tell our stories, shouting them into the wind until they are heard.
-
So many of us don't have the voice. But we shout anyways. I'm just going to keep shouting.

By yet to be reclaimed are you implying there's some knowledge they had that we haven't since rediscovered? Seems unlikely. Though possible.
-
Yes, that is precisely what I mean. There has been very little research done in transgender medicine since then for many reasons.
-
Trans people were marginalized after the war and made taboo with few exceptions. We are still clawing out of a 40 year legacy of falsehood
-
created by Harry Benjamin. Most research now is funded by AIDS grants. There is no medical concensus on HRT dosing.
-
Because blanket trans exclusions are common and legal for insurance companies, our providers cannot use F64.1 as a diagnosis code.
-
Therefore there is no simple body of epidemiological research. Literally everything is ad hoc and mired in post-war stigma.
-
We're getting there, both in terms of medical and social science. But IfW was doing longitudinal studies.
-
Stuff that will still take decades to repeat.

Wow I never knew there were books in this topic area back then. I am curious now of how far back transgender history goes/data/sources avail
-
There were periodicals directed at the gay and trans reading market, sold openly at news stands. There were clubs where gay and trans ppl
-
met in public. There was public debate of same-sex marriage. Some trans women had special licenses to "dress in drag" (which was illegal).
-
It was a kludgey fix, but it was steps toward a fix. Hormone therapy & surgeries are relatively recent things in the grand scheme of
-
humans. I don't know if history-- written or oral-- of older generations of trans folk were recorded there but I assume they were & were
-
lost forever.
