So, learning a language by immersion is fun but it's def. different than as a child, and I don't think neuroplasticity is the sole reason.

Interesting. My experience in Belgium was the opposite. The folks in my town were happy to correct my grammar. Guess I was just very lucky.
-
It's definitely a city thing. In Prague I'd occasionally order in Czech and they'd just default to English, even when my Czech was accurate.
-
Watching my sister the linguist in both Prague and Germany, she aggressively asked ppl, and got a lot of feedback that way she wouldn't o.w.

But does it work? Even in a brief visit to Europe I found it easier every day
-
It does, and I'm improving rapidly but I definitely need structured learning in addition
-
I think also children's language / vocab/ conversation builds naturally from simple to complex more than adult immersion
-
I wonder though if the adult learning is more practical based on need
-
Children's actual learning (versus their schooling) is also very practical based on need. :) And different needs, but not all that different

Yeah, it's a odd combo. On one hand you now have an L1 to draw on but also as an adult people don't let you figure shit out by being wrong?
-
Also because i'm still thinking about it did you mean Frischkäse? I can't figure out what you meant to say instead of rental cheese
-
Just making up the absurd
-
Honestly as a fellow German learner you mix up an 'auf 'with an 'an' in some verbs and you can get pretty close

In the Netherlands when I try Dutch I ask if I say it right. Otherwise they just switch to English and move on.

I've sometimes received something different than I thought I was ordering but eat it anyway, so it ends up being a way to try new foods.
