The one at my local grocery store reads: do not REMOVE CARD ... Well, when you put it that way, I want to follow the big instructions...
-
I enjoy the fact that all of the card readers use the same noise for errors and for letting you know everything worked as expected.
-
The one at the gas station near me makes this horrible game show noise WHEN IT APPROVES A SALE, & I swear it's hooked up to surround sound.
-
Lottery ticket machines here do that, because clerks were scamming people, so they play a little ditty, and say you won in English/French

I like
@deviantollam 's suggestion of making the noise the 1-Up Mushroom noise from Super Mario Bros. -
Shouldnt it be the sonic collecting rings noise as money is taken from your card?
-
That's also a good idea!
-
You can program some of them to play any tune you want as the tone. A colleague once made one I was using play the imperial march as a prank

Lol! I was the prestige manager at ULTA for awhile, when we first started using those things...people thought that sound meant card decline.
-
It actually embarrassed people. Or they would jump back bc they were so startled. I hate those machines.
-
Newer ones have a different tone that sounds a little less like your card is about to explode. Just so you don't leave it in & forget it.

this reads as vaguely erotic

This is true life panic
-
we don't have these machines in germany so i'm comparing to ... other... experiences.
-
You don't have payment kiosks that you insert your credit/debit card into that warm you not to remove the card until the payment completes?
-
The German machines are similar but more pleasant by far. Also European card tech is more advanced.
-
The kindness is largely because you're used to them, according to what I was told during the conversion here. We'll get there... Eventually

There are many wireless NFC credit card readers in Europe as well as Canada and Australia. Never saw one in US.pic.twitter.com/0x2VJe8Zak
