The underlying principle that speech must be free to topple oppressive regimes is patently false, as shown by our nation's own founding.

I am against government oppression, and that includes protection of speech but necessarily includes governmental empowerment of oppressors.

Within *my lifetime* regimes have been toppled by speech and that speech wasn't protected. Sooo... tell me again why we let Nazis roam?

There was a time when those words were noble. But Voltaire and Evelyn Beatrice Hall (the real author of the quote) didn't know nazism.

Would Voltaire have kept the same philosophy if he had known the modern consequences of fast-spreading hate speech? I don't think so.

My point is: the real problem is not that there are free speech aficionados. It's that hate speech is protected in the USA.
