A few months ago, I was asked to give a talk about some work I had done analyzing and investigating fake science as open science/data.
-
-
A key part of this story takes place in Charlottesville. And I'll be giving the talk in Portland.
-
In the time since I was invited, 100ish people in Charlottesville chanted Nazi slogans in a park, and Portland is about to explode.
-
I don't select these backdrops for the talks I give, but it goes to show how we can't treat these things in isolation.
-
The people of Portland and Charlottesville must know the power and danger of legitimizing hatred. How can we escape it?
-
I can't escape it. For the past year I've been exploring a move to Portland, with full knowledge of the atmosphere but a belief it was safer
-
So unless I move to Europe, which may happen yet, the only thing I can do now is speak & hope my work makes a dent in the legitimacy of hate
-
What was once mostly abstract issue has now become super important in how we act as digital citizens. I hope I don't let y'all down.

Wow--is the talk available online? Have you written about it?
-
I have but it was a quick analysis that I have to restore from backup. I'm publishing a longer writeup this year. The talk will be online.
-
Would love to share with
@Civicist readers when either goes up, and I'm personally interested as well
