Prediction: autonomous cars won't ever be good enough to handle edge cases around non-autonomous systems, leading to special access roads.

If only there were some kind of... rails... we could embed in the roads, to minimize edge-cases. We could call them.. road-rails? Needs work
-
Why it sounds like they would have to run on a predictable schedule
-
And they would need some kind of stations at which to predictably load and unload passengers and cargo

Counterprediction: They'll be able to handle edge cases as well as or better than humans, but we'll blame them for it differently.
-
Not that humans are god-awful at operating thousand-pound hunks of metal flying feet from unshielded bystanders at 40mph or anything.
-
Evidence suggests that you're right, but not the way you think: that is, blame for eng. issues falls disproportionately on human operators.
-
Right–but in the absence of a visible human operator, blame goes to the company with the visible name.
-
As well it should!
-
It's a weird asymmetry, though. 30,000 deaths due to "human error" would be viewed as less serious than one by computer error.
-
Indeed. It's not ex vacuo though. There is a reenforcement loop driving the aggressive assignment of fault to human operators.
-
Both the assignment of, and the denial of, fault: we ascribe it to "human error" and then treat that as understandable.

The opposite is possible: the poor restricted to cheap automated, ride-share systems, with access to manual a privileged freedom.

Agreed on all points. I see autonomous airborne drones as much more viable, and eventually they can carry everything.

Implemented just enough to fuck the have-nots, just like internet access.
