Prediction: autonomous cars won't ever be good enough to handle edge cases around non-autonomous systems, leading to special access roads.
-
-
Were I a cynic, I'd say that that was the intent. But nah, when has that ever happened?

-
If only there were some kind of... rails... we could embed in the roads, to minimize edge-cases. We could call them.. road-rails? Needs work
-
Why it sounds like they would have to run on a predictable schedule
-
And they would need some kind of stations at which to predictably load and unload passengers and cargo

Honestly, I don't think that's where the divide will be, because dedicated road systems are too expensive. Rather, we'll get to a point +

Private highways already exist in the US
-
talking to friends in Wisconsin, it sounds like Walker wants to privatize public highways.
-
Privatisation usually leads to a Minimum Maintainable Product, though. Premium service only where it's profitable.
-
Also, standards, especially competing ones. They've been tried before, and never really got anywhere. Oh, and liability.
-
Profit would be in gatekeeping access by putting up toll booths, I suspect. And then services for commercial traffic, maybe.
-
Gatekeeping based on whether you can afford the combination of toll roads, insurance premiums, and liability

Even if it's not that clear-cut, autonomous car tech companies investing in infrastructure is likely to increase social stratification.
-
Tech co.'s will start pumping private money in to shore up road construction in communities that can afford autonomous cars first.
-
Particularly in "small govt," GOP-held regions, local govts will likely see private investment as a reason to scale back public spending.

interesting- i am curious to see whether this happens, or if car makers will have enough legal clout to put them on the road anyway.

And the road systems will either carefully route to only "the desired" places or step on "the undeserving" in the process.

Cars are already a pretty expensive price to buy into the existing transportation system.
-
And in a way that's extra bad for the poor since they're prone to breaking unexpectedly.
