As you can see, you can sit on them. You can walk between them. They ask you not to stand on them or jump between them, however.
But as you walk among them, they become large quickly. The pathways undulate. You cannot see except for what is before you.pic.twitter.com/ObFjiDt3Nf
The evils of the Holocaust started small. Small enough that we ignored it. The US famously turned away Jewish refugees.
But quickly it became overwhelming. There was no clear path out. The evil became enveloping.
This memorial captures that well. It sits in the middle of Berlin, between Potsdamer Platz and Brandenburger Tor.
Our president visited a similar memorial. And the only words he could muster were those of a 12 year old forced to write a thank you card.
I am not sure which is worse, his utter lack of empathy or his incompetence to even try to cover it up. He is embarassing. He is vile.
But among his vileness, please never forget that evil starts small, small enough to sit upon.
