If you've never put yourself in a city where you don't speak the language and survived for a couple weeks, I recommend it, if you can.

You shouldn't *need* to do this to have empathy for immigrants. But it'd be dishonest to say the experience doesn't affect that.

I've resolved to speak more Spanish locally, to interact more with people who find my community to be a strange, confusing place.

I feel embarassed that I had to leverage my privilege so hard to get over the anxiety I have of not being able to keep up in Spanish.

But also if I never try I never will. And it's never too late to try to become better, I guess.
