I've thrice been in Lyfts/Ubers in Seattle/Portland where, when I tell the driver I'm from Virginia, they start talking about re-enactments.

I think there was a tectonic event during Jim Crow that shifted the Idaho plate from Northern Oklahoma up and squeezed it between WA and MT.

I think people associate VA with the Civil War as a result of the large number of significant battles that occurred in VA.
