The shirt had a big Confederate flag on it.

Dealing with Civil War apologists is maybe my least favorite thing about living in VA. But what's weird is how often I see it elsewhere.
-
I've thrice been in Lyfts/Ubers in Seattle/Portland where, when I tell the driver I'm from Virginia, they start talking about re-enactments.
-
One driver went on a lengthy rant about how the war wasn't about slavery. Another told me with pride about his Confederate memorabilia.
-
Trump's comments about the Civil War legitimizes this behavior in a very unique way. It's one reason why I don't feel safe in the US.
-
All these little things add up, like the contractor today that basically just openly admitted to xenophobia while standing in my house.
-
I don't even believe it's malice. It's simply ignorance, in the "not knowing" sense of the word. And it adds up and adds up and adds up.
-
Individually, we can dismiss these things. But we have to take them together, because people are literally dying from this buildup of rage.

I'm assuming you don't mean Centerville, VA but Charlottesville, VA?
-
