The first iPhone was built off technology largely developed first by the federal government, mostly the Defense Department.

Most of the battery tech in Tesla was first developed with federal research dollars. Same with the control algorithms, neural nets, etc.

I was a tech transition specialist for 10 years. It was literally my job to help move research from labs to commercial applications.

Commercialization is the last step in a very long development process. Pretending like it's the only step in innovation is disingenuous.

There's some crypto-Calvinist notion that actually the rich are smarter, that's why they're rich, so they should decide what to research.

But... that's not even how capitalism works. Individual rich people/companies are very likely stupid, the system is only good collectively.

Basic research more or less requires this idea. For more sensational stuff, paying musk is probably more efficient at directing money.

It is always one person that end up deciding. Or a committee but it is the same problem. So more like "what musk sold" than what he want.
