These things seemed obvious, even at the time. His motivation for not building them was more sinister: poor people used public transit.

By the way,
@langdonw wrote about this in "Do Artifacts have Politics" almost *40 years ago.* https://innovate.ucsb.edu/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Winner-Do-Artifacts-Have-Politics-1980.pdf … -
Moses did this in several cities, including New Orleans.
-
And here in Portland
-
Idk if Moses was involved but this sounds a LOT like Chicago. It's not an accident most CTA lines serve historically white hoods.
-
He wasn't directly, but his "planning" solutions informed the implementation of segregation, even in major cities that did not hire him.
-
Should clarify: in Portland he didn't use racial component. We'd already made it super white. KKK, redlined, racial exclusion laws, etc.
-
Moses just plowed I-205 right into annexed town/neighborhood Lents downtown.
@FosterPowellNA, etc got act together and fought/defeated I-405 -
Seattle nearly built a freeway through its black neighborhood in the 60s. It was killed in the name of white homeowners and the arboretum.

Emily, get to know
@elonmusk before you label him another Robert Moses. And buckle up... he's just getting started.#Innovation -
She's not labeling him Robert Moses. She's imploring him not to be Robert Moses -- and making sure the rest of us pay attention too.
-
No complaint with that.

You may be right, but I think you could also see him as using the rich to pay for scientific research. Model S, paying for model 3 R&D.
-
Issues are not always black and white here, and I think it's disingenuous to paint him as an elitist. His companies are advancing science.
-
There is no doubt the rich will benefit first if he succeeds. But all of humanity benefits eventually. Capitalism. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Id love an alt.

I'd be happy to discuss this with you when you get back to Portland.

Certainly important to consider long term effects, but not really fair to lump him with a racist just b/c he want to solve traffic woes.
