I'm more then happy to help you find ways to rearchitect things, but I suspect you have a decent handle on things

I just run a static site generator and occasionally spin things up to fart around. I'm largely limited by time/energy to sink into it.

Makes sense. Shouldn't be costly to run that, but I get the cognitive barrier of an expiring free tier. Plus, time is always fleeting

heroku actually uses AWS infrastructure, so you're not exactly avoiding eventually paying for the thing. Have heard the interface is nice

If you run the static site generator on your local machine, you could upload the output to an S3 bucket set to serve HTML publicly.

AWS is pretty good with giving out credits to devs. I'll see if I can find a code for you.

(if you can get to an AWS event or pop-up loft, they give them out kinda readily. I'm at a conf where they're at, I'll check...)

You lose some flexibility as to where you can publish from (vs. running the generator on an ec2 instance), but S3 is dirt cheap.

I'm biased since I work for AWS but I happily pay about $25 for t2.micro EC and RDS instances. Leveraging Lambda/API Gateway/Dynamo is cheap

Dependinh on how much data you have you may consider glacier for storage at lower rate.

Same, mine expires today. I added a payment method and set alerts for charges above $0... But those alerts are under the free tier too...

Go to digital ocean. Better and cheaper than AWS free tier.
