I think about this a lot. I dropped out of a PhD almost 10 years ago and have spent the last 6 managing data scientists. 1/x

The hiring pool is increasingly people who have completed technical PhDs and now really want to be in industry. I love being in industry 2/x

Same. What happens during the PhD can suck too, but what I can't fathom is how we do a worse job getting 24 year olds to where they want to

be at 30 than 18 year olds where they want to be at 22 (and we ain't so great at the latter to start with).
