People need to get beyond "privacy is good" as the entire extent of their analysis and start exploring the ethics of data use.

"Privacy is good" hasn't been a sufficiently compelling argument at any point in the last 20 years. We need to earnestly evaluate harm.

Unlike in 1999, we actually have cheap computing power, easy to use advanced algorithms, and massive storage capabilities.

We also have a government that has and will use data unscrupulously to target individuals. They've always been bad, now they're worse.

It is more important than ever to have these conversations. Publicly, privately, and among peers and coworkers.
