Pandas gives you an apply. It's kind of like map but the type of what comes out depends on what you do.

its not, sadly. I'm dealing with needing ti chain operations and i'm being stymied by type inference so I need a new approach.

I have not programmed in Python, but looking it over, I don't see any obvious advantages. It's a requirement for the current task I assume.
