"Consent the participants" is Step 0 for any research protocol, except apparently at Facebook. These rules were made because of Nazis.

If I remember correctly, one of their main justifications was: "We do it all the time, so this is nothing new." 
"We don't need an IRB, we have internal protections!" I... what.
