Lot of talk in recent days about tech ethics. I want to talk about what ethics is and isn't in other fields.

So when I talk about needing to teach ethics, what I refer to is training by case study on the importance of accountability.

And not some philosophical gibberish that someone will try to throw lambda calculus at. Ethics isn't a field to solve.

It's like growing crops: you have to keep doing it, keep learning, because there's never a time we don't need them.

Even regulations are difficult because of the rate of change in tech. By the time a regulation is put in place, the tech may be obsolete.

This is why you regulate process, not tech.

the flipside is that you can get hired in tech without being certified by degrees & associations, which is worth preserving…

absolutely! IMO this is an obligation of seniority, and senior engineers/managers should be trained in these matters

There is underlying resistance on both sides to committing to any of the principles that make ethics work, though.

Principled fact finding, "the one who asserts must prove" -- doesn't really jibe with "Trust Women".
