she was a teacher, a leader, and an elder who survived the catastrophe of multiple members of her pod being harvested for aquariums.

she took in waifs and strays, taught them her pod's dialect, made sure they were well fed, accepted, and made them family.

The thing that struck me most is that she probably remembered when the oceans were quiet.
