There was a pretty good documentary about the flyoff. Boeing used a single piece of carbon fiber for the upper wing assembly.

fabricating it was a massive challenge. Lockheed fucked up the titanium bulkhead during its development, cost 10s of millions.

It was actually fairly well thought out given initial reqs iirc; but Navy redef of reqs screwed them out.
