She asked me what I wanted to be as a child. I told her, truthfully, "a fighter pilot." She said that was an unusual choice for a girl.

Growing up as a boy, what were then normal experiences have been retroactively labeled as nonconforming. I forget this sometimes.

She also told me that she's visiting one of her 5 brothers, and in only slightly hushed tones, told me he's the gay one.

Sometimes I find myself needing to remember that the only difference is we now have language tools to describe what has always existed.
