Serious thread for my queer and trans family who find themselves feeling unsafe with these results coming in.

If you have to leave electronics behind, you need to know how to navigate. Paper maps are going to save your life. Learn to read them.
-
Look for satellite tv dishes to orient yourself. They always point south to within +/- 10 degrees.
-
Interstates have a numerical code. 2 digit odd numbered routes (e.g. I-95) run predominantly N-S. Even (e.g.) run E-W.
-
Mile markers always count up to the prevailing direction, so mile markers going up mean you're heading either prevailing North or East.
-
3 digit interstates don't follow this rule. If the hundreds digit is even, it is a bypass around a city (e.g. I-495).
-
Odd hundreds digit is a spur into/out of a city (e.g. I-384). These will get you from suburbs to urban areas.
-
If someone abusive reports you missing, don't try to hide in wilderness. Scent dogs work there, not in high traffic urban areas.
-
Some states are installing/have installed facial recognition systems at bridges and border crossings.
-
Secondary roads are key. Know how to find/id them on a paper map. Likewise know how to id toll roads, which will also have cameras at tolls.
-
Your best bet is going to be a shelter or halfway house, somewhere legally prohibited from giving out identities.
-
Living off the grid long term is going to be nearly impossible, but you can weather a storm and reestablish a support network.
-
If things get really screwed, you might find luck heading to a city with an embassy sympathetic to LGBT rights. Who knows what'll happen.
-
Otherwise, your first priority should be to establish legal residence somewhere with a safer environment and find a livelihood.
-
Yes, this is *presently* nearly impossible, but in hard situations communities have historically come together, and they might again.
-
The most immediate threat won't be from the government, though cops can't be trusted. It's the people who will act violently without fear.
-
If you think this is overreacting, it's not. A HUGE percentage of homeless youth are queer. Trans kids suffer abuse at higher rates.
-
These are survival skills that are needed *now* and have been needed under the Obama administration. Trump would just amplify that.
