In 2000, I was 18, and my first vote was the Bush/Gore election. I registered in my high school cafeteria. At the polls, I was turned away.
Some states require you to declare party affiliations, some do not. It all varies.

National registries are frowned upon here, and voter registration is elective.

We have a national number, our Social Security Number, but there is exceptional resistance on both sides to using it for voting.
