tbh i would much rather long relations (especially in stastical mechanics) be broken up into more than one equation

As would I, but this is not always really feasible, and in some cases can obscure things. It's trading one abstraction for another.

i get this but making distinctions by font pushes the current abstraction past its usefulness

it works fine in pure math, the number of symbols is containable, in applied math i can't read shit without reference
