I feel like I've seen people say that developers are supposed to be able to write in any given language proficiently? Is that a thing?

I mean, so, I can do the standard things (basic math, etc) in any given programming language written in english

but at this point I feel like I'm always going to write better in Python / Ruby, Java / C are always gonna kick my ass, Javascript be meh

I feel like it would take an undue amount of energy (not time) to get proficient in a language the farther it moved away from Python

At that point, it's about learning patterns and features. Many of which were originally designed to solve unfamiliar problems

So the learning process/energy expense is two-fold: learning the feature & also learning what possibly defunct problem it solves.
