This took place during Vanilla, with TBC still a ways away, mid-2006ish. Back then, auction houses were only in Ironforge and Orgrimmar.

So these cities became the de facto hubs for each faction. And each only had one flightmaster.
-
The flightmasters were pretty low level, and they'd regularly get killed during city raids, but they'd respawn quickly.
-
But if they didn't die, they wouldn't respawn. It follows that if one is careful, and can survive the guards, one could kite it away.
-
Further, as it turns out, Demoralizing Shout would partially reset the aggro table and could be used as a no-damage kiting mechanic.
-
So we put together a small group of people with a well-geared protection warrior. We rode into Orgrimmar and tagged the flight master.
-
Carefully, we separated the guards and took him the to hill in the Barrens where Wailing Caverns was. Alive.
-
Since he was alive, he didn't respawn. So the main Horde city had no flightmaster. For three hours.
-
Until finally a GM came and did something to the character -- it started wandering around with the conflag effect.
-
We got a very stern talking to, and the game was hotfixed shortly after that. Flight masters and key NPCs are no longer kiteable.
-
This change has persisted from what must have been version 1.09 to whatever the version is coming out soon. A little mark left on the game.
-
This wasn't the only time I would have an impact on the game's mechanics. But it was definitely the longest-lasting.
-
In the end, we never did get our ransom demands of 10,000 Bolts of Linen met. ;)
