      For EMR systems, I agree. But airgapped medical devices are still running XP in the wild. A lot.

      The driver model that changed with Vista made it substantially harder to run embedded systems. And usability is factor, too

      Okay - so you mean, (a) it's easier to develop embedded systems using XP rather than Vista, and (b) WinXP is easier to use?

      Of course, if there were other benefits to using Vista, that might outweigh the extra difficulty. I take it there are none?

      Not really, no. Some embedded code wasn't just difficult, but impossible, to run. And *nix is generally a no-go due to usability.

          There are active movements out there to develop interop data protocols for sharing data, etc. in medical devices. XP is dying out

          But medical device clearances are based on using predicate devices to justify safety claims. Changing software proven to work...

          adds a huge burden to the device clearance process. Eventually we'll get enough modern OS's in there but it'll take a bit.

          there is now in developing interfaces for Linux-based phones, tablets and DVRS/entertainment boxes.
