Okay - so you mean, (a) it's easier to develop embedded systems using XP rather than Vista, and (b) WinXP is easier to use?

Of course, if there were other benefits to using Vista, that might outweigh the extra difficulty. I take it there are none?

Not really, no. Some embedded code wasn't just difficult, but impossible, to run. And *nix is generally a no-go due to usability.

Lifecycles of Class III medical devices are about an order of magnitude greater than that of an operating system.

It just so happened that a breakpoint occured after XP, which was a well-matured OS. Used in many mission critical systems still.
