Ahh, people going 'OMG Windows 98!1!!' for some random use case where the system runs isolated from any network. Like in-flight TV etc.

Well, if done properly, and that's a big if. But main advantage over, say, XP Embedded is its ability to do near-realtime.
-
And it really depends on what it controls, too. It's often mostly the control interface, not within the critical path.
-
THERAC-25 tells us that interface *is* in the critical path. But yeah. It's still a great OS for those applications.
-
Hmm, yes, I guess so. My definition of 'critical' is whether a restart of it affects the operation of what it controls

-
And I would most certainly not advocate building anything NEW based on it, but if you have an existing, stable config ...
-
Basically, most of the rep Windows has comes from people running it at home, on cheap hardware, with bad software.
-
Properly configured, stripped to the bare minimum, you can rival BSD uptimes on the right hardware

-
But that requires work, and care, and like all things is something that gets saved on. Linux would be no different.
