I love that Rensselaer has a successful, extremely intelligent woman of color leading the institution. I do not love what has happened.
I do not love that they lost my promissory note for one semester, causing me to lose financial aid. Even though I handed it in in person.
-
-
I do not love that they made my medical leave retroactive to one day beyond the tuition refund date.
-
I do not love that they offered almost no mental health services, and that gender support was nonexistent.
-
I do not love that they changed the curriculum midstream, preventing me from finishing my engineering double degree.
-
I do not love that I had to graduate in seven semesters, with six semesters worth of aid (while guaranteed 8), while earning 130+ credits
-
I do not love that they throw lavish parties for administration, with famous pop singers with $50,000 cash contract riders
-
I do not love that they receive record-breaking endowments devoid of transparency and use none of that cash to aid students.
-
And I do not love that they apparently do so under a billion dollars of leverage, while at the end of the day students can't afford to eat.
-
Thanks to many years of concerted effort, I only owe about $7,000 on student loans. That's barely more than a 1 year meal plan there.
-
I was, at one point, called the "model student of the new millenium." This is what RPI did to their model student, apparently.
-
One year, they even had the audacity to use my picture in the handbook on the financial aid page. The same year they lost my loan.
-
Department of Ed. scrutiny at this point is well-deserved. And it is utterly shameful that it got to this point.
-
And oh yeah, they tried to withhold my degree at the end of everything, claiming I had to register for a zero credit semester to access it.
-
I used to, on the first of every month, write a check for rent, and write a check for the exact same amount to repay that school.
-
It has become utterly unaffordable. And now they're putting federal student aid in jeopardy. This is not what students or alums deserve.
