The Proud Boys exist solely to generate a narrative that the left is unstable, violent, and must be cracked down in. The Proud Boys have no real politics and very little ideology. The Nazis hate them. They have few convictions.

The Proud Boys are white supremacist only in the sense that they know white supremacy evokes a response from the left.

They don’t lose when they show up and get their asses kicked. That’s what they show up to do. They fucking loved PVD even though they got bloodied and wrecked.

Even the doxing campaigns have been not very effective. They don’t hide, and they don’t seem to be impacted very much, unlike those distantly connected to Nazi groups.

Gavin McInnes, however, did have connections to Unite the Right, and offered full support to the event which saw two terrorists marching side by side, only withdrawing that support when it became clear it would blow back.

The most dangerous conclusion is that the Proud Boys are a creation of the GOP to set a narrative against the left. This could also be the most effective angle against them, because using them to expose the GOP would likely mean cutting off their support.

Part of their strategy is to bring forward people of color, like Tiny. It makes the “you’re a white supremacist!” arguments fall flat. This is deliberate.

Internal Proud Boy chats have very little discussion by way of talk about race in the way that Nazi chats do. When you read neo-Nazi chats, they talk convoluted bullshit race theory for hours. Proud Boys don’t give a fuck, they just wanna beat the shit out of and trigger the libs

Anyhow, this is what Proud Boys do and get away with and we need a solution like right fucking now.https://twitter.com/leftkist/status/1050973870511939584?s=21 …

I think it would help if we understood that the animating dynamic is not white supremacism (though it is latent) but authoritarianism, which crosses all kinds of racial, ethnic and religious boundaries.

David, is an appropriate analogy of the PB’s to the initial incarnation of the American Legion (1918 - ?): as an authoritarian RW muscle squad, but not as explicitly racists as the Klan of the same time period?
