Having spent a lot of time over the past several years thinking about and studying ethics in technology, the more I am convinced that the discussions about ethics in technology have a major, irreconcilable blind spot.

Should we be eliminating power dynamics or inverting power dynamics? If we try to scrub power dynamics from a system too early in a neatly bounded space, we just let those power dynamics to creep back in, or we need those boundaries to be impenetrable.

My next ethics talk may just be a single slide that says REVOLUTION

You can probably frame this in a way less vulnerable to right-wing narratives by doing it in terms of outcome.
-
For example the hiring AI is not unbiased/fair just bc it stops downranking women's applications. It's only fair when the outcome is ~50-50 employment in each subset/dept with sufficient sample size & equal pay.
-
Likewise for %s of other marginalized groups matching or exceeding % in general population.
-
It's an interesting thought. I've often thought that one way we could turn the political system in favor of PoC and women is simply to make their votes count for 1.3x my vote. It's not elegant but you could weight the input and the output would change for the better.
-
Imagine if votes were weighted proportional to a model of how likely political outcomes could completely destroy your life.
-
By the way, just abolishing the electoral college and the senate would achieve a lot more than your 1.3x weighting.
-
That's as unrealistic as weighting votes for targeted groups though. The system as it stands produces illegitimate outcomes. Least costly way to go forward is DC, Puerto Rico statehood and maybe break California up into smaller states.
-
Yes immediate
#DCstatehood#PRstatehood to end US vote theft in voteless DC & PuertoRico.#OrganizeAS American Samoa to promote equal to GU MP VI, removing malicious vote theft from AS citizens living in states, removing maliciously costly US#GreenCard from people born US but AS

If you ideology requires lobotomizing AI, you’ve lost the plot.

If you “design” it to behave a certain way other than autonomous pattern recognition then it ceases to be AI

Why don't we let AI decide it's own biases? The results may surprise you

There does seem to be some fundamental logic flaw in how the Amazon AI was set up. Normally you would ignore the most common factors in favor of ones that were unique. Given two otherwise identical applications, the one that is more different (e.g. women's college) should win.
-
Only if you were optimizing for unique hires vs trying to get more of the same thing you already have...
-
Oh, well there you go!
